What to do after a motor vehicle accident...

Being involved in an accident can be stressful. Follow these steps to help keep everyone safe and make the repair process as smooth as possible.

1. Ensure Everyone's Safety

  • Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

  • Switch off the engine and turn on your hazard lights.

  • Check whether anyone has been injured.

  •

2. Contact Emergency Services if Required

  • Dial 111 immediately if anyone is injured or if emergency assistance is required.

  • For non-urgent incidents, report the accident to Police on 105 if appropriate.

  •

3. Move to a Safe Location

If it is safe and your vehicle can be moved, relocate it out of the flow of traffic to help prevent further accidents. If the vehicle cannot be moved safely, stay clear of traffic and wait for assistance.

4. Exchange Information

Collect the following details from all drivers involved:

  • Full name

  • Phone number

  • Address

  • Vehicle registration number

  • Driver licence details (if required)

  • Insurance company and claim information (if available)

If there are any witnesses, ask for their names and contact details.

5. Document the Scene

Take clear photographs of:

  • All vehicles involved

  • Vehicle damage

  • The accident scene

  • Road conditions, signs, and any relevant surroundings

These photos may assist your insurer and repairer.

6. Notify Your Insurance Company

Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to lodge your claim. Provide them with all relevant information, including:

  • Details of the accident

  • Information from the other driver(s)

  • Witness details

  • Police event or incident number (if applicable)

Your insurer will advise you of your claim number and the next steps.

7. Arrange Vehicle Repairs

If your vehicle is safe to drive, bring it to R.J. Phillips Panel and Paint for an assessment.

If it is not roadworthy, arrange for it to be towed. You can request that your insurer or towing company transport your vehicle directly to R.J. Phillips Panel and Paint.
